Administrative or Biographical History Erland Carlsson was born on August 24, 1822, in the parish of Älghult, Kronobergs län, Sweden. He was ordained in 1849 in Wäxjö, and he served as a pastor in Lessebo parish, Kronobergs län for four years. In 1853 he accepted a call from Drs. Fjellstedt and Hasselquist to serve the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Chicago and at St. Charles, IL. In 1875 he left Chicago to serve the Swedish Lutheran Church in Andover where he stayed until 1884 when he resigned due to poor health. He was called to serve as general manager for Augustana College in 1886 and served until 1889 when he, because of declining health, resigned and moved to Kansas. He was President for the Augustana Synod 1881-1888 and was one of the directors for Augustana College and Theological Seminary until 1889. He married Eva Charlotta Andersson born 1829 in Timmele, Bohuslän, and they had eight children: Annie, Fredrika, Emmy, Christina, Ebenezer, and Samuel.
Scope & Content The collection includes personal memorabilia, biographical material, clippings, papers, correspondence and books, relating to Dr. Carlsson's professional life as a pastor in the Swedish Lutheran Church in Chicago and Andover, and as President for the Augustana Synod. His personal papers are filed with the correspondence and include student records from Lund University, ordination papers, and biographical notes. A small group of the early letters (1853-1857) were translated and published by Augustana Historical Society in 1935. The letters were translated by E.W. Olson, Augustana College faculty member. G. Westin also used four letters from the collection and published them in his work "Emigranterna och kyrkan."
