Administrative or Biographical History The college was founded in 1849 by the Lutheran Synod of Illinois. Hillsboro College was the predecessor of Illinois State University in Springfield, Illinois; Augustana College and Theological Seminary, Paxton and Rock Island, Illinois; and Carthage College, Wisconsin. Augustana Synod pastor, Lars Paul Esbjörn, was one of its trustees.
