This photograph shows the Centennial Parade. Coming down the middle of the street is a parade float carrying young women. The women are clothed in bathing suits. One of the young women, Sally Watson, is sitting in what appears to be a throne. The other woman that can be identified is Sally Winters of Des Moines, Iowa. The only crowds that can be seen are spectators leaning out of the windows of the tall buildings on the side of the street.
According to The American Swedish Monthly: Swedish Pioneer Centennial 1848-1948 [June 1948 issue found in the Swenson Swedish Immigration Research stacks at: Immig. f E 184 .S23 A7 24251707] "On Tuesday, June 22 the group moves on to Iowa City where the University of Iowa will be host at an informal lunch, after which the party journeys to Des Moines by automobile. Midsummer Eve will be celebrated with a Centennial Parade held in connection with the Hawkeye Holidays. An official banquet is scheduled for the evening at the Hotel Des Moines."
