Description The Centennial Celebration began at the Chicago Stadium on June 4, 1948. Approximately 18,000 people gathered to hear President Truman, Prince Bertil of Sweden, Carl Sandburg and others speak and perform. This photograph shows the stage in which a presidential podium is set up. There are many people on the stage. They are members of the Official Swedish Delegation and the Pioneer Committees. The persons shown include but are not limited to, Vilas Johnson, President Harry S. Truman, Prince Bertil, Dr. Conrad Bergendoff, Gösta Oldenburg, Dr. Nanna Svartz, Ingeborg Sylvander, and many others indiscernible due to distance of the photograph and fuzziness of the photograph.

Vilas Johnson was of the accounting firm of Arthur Andersen & Company in Chicago, Illinois, Chairman of the Chicago Committee, and Vice President of the Association. President Harry S. Truman was the 33rd president of the United States (1945-1953). Prince Bertil of Sweden is clothed in a medium colored suit, light shirt, and dark necktie. Dr. Conrad Bergendoff was the president of Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois and President of the Executive Board of the Association for the National Centennial Committee. Gösta Oldenburg represented Sweden in the U.S. and helped with preparation of the events.

Cameras, instruments, and crowds can be seen in the photograph.
